Re-imagining Mythology - Playing Cards Design

Due to the digitization of entertainment industry, a lot of our indigenous cultural practices, traditions and art forms from the past are on the verge of extinction. In this project, I have explored two such ancient Indian art forms- Chitrakathi and Ganjifa and tried to bring them in our contemporary lifestyle. As the purpose of both these art forms was to teach, learn and tell stories of Ramayana and Mahabharata, I intend to do the same by breaking down the process of understanding mythology.
As characters play an important role in building up any story, especially in the Indian mythology where characters have been portrayed strongly and have been worshipped by the people too, I have focused on character introduction and design.
My aim was to redesign the characters from Ramayana in a contemporary style but with the essence of Chitrakathi art form in it and the form inspiration taken from Ganjifa cards.
hand drawn sketches of the characters
12 face cards digitally coloured
A descriptive accordion that will fold into the deck
pattern at the back of each card and accordion
