Lamination and Delamination

This project proposal of designing Buddhist temple comes at the end of design principle course. The first phase course explores phenomenon of ink drops in a contained water to investigate its spatial compositions and transformations. After close investigations and analyses of the phenomenon through drawings and makings, the explorations were then translated to elements of architecture.
Understanding the phenomena∙Directionality
Directionality and density were key aspects within the phenomenon that were translated as models and drawings for focused exploration.
Understanding the Ritual∙Buddhist Morning Service
Notational drawings visualize the acts within the ritual. The relationship between the space and the acts of ritual was analyzed through elements of movement and sound. Spatial needs of the ritual were then identified.
Lamination and Delamination∙Structural Studies
Studies on laminating structures that adapt to the ground condition of the site. Repeated load-bearing legs to overcome the slope.
Site Plan∙Section
The structure grabs the two existing building in between, allowing circulation to take place at both end and around. Looping circulation resembles that of the ritual.
Slope∙Orientation
Organization of the spaces takes advantage of the slope condition. Ancillary spaces are oriented at the back of the structure, meeting the steep slope. Main activity space which is the meditation hall hovers over the mild slope, overlooking the building in front, allowing more light and views.
Transitions∙Space
Stairs and ramps to the entry elongates the transition between active space to passive space which is the meditation hall.
Lamination and Delamination∙Threshold
The stairway marks important transition point in the entry way, making a "turn" to spiritual and passive space. Carrying the same logic of laminating structure, the rotated layers emphasize the "turn" in the circulation.
