Struve V.Ya. Recalled how, while driving past Pulkovo for the first time in 1828, he was so impressed by the terrain that he exclaimed:

Император одобрил выбор места расположения будущей обсерватории и сделал распоряжение о передаче Академии наук земельного участка площадью 20.5 десятин (22.40 гектара) с указанием: "Ближе одной версты от южной границы этого участка не вести никакого другого строительства без разрешения директора Обсерватории".

The emperor approved the choice of location for future observatory and ordered to transfer this land to the Academy of Sciences with an area of 20.5 acres (22.40 hectares), indicating: "Closer than one verst from the southern border of this site, no other construction shall be conducted without the permission of the director of the Observatory."

Фонтан-грот "Старик" с водометом у пулковской горы
Вода поступала с вершины Пулковской горы, высота которой составляет 252 фута над уровнем моря. Особенность местности состоит в том, что гора возвышается на краю природной террасы - Ижорского уступа, который некогда был берегом древнего моря, и господствует над Невской долиной. Фонтан-грот представляет собой один из прекрасных памятников русской
