To commemorate their 15-year anniversary, Telkomsel, the Indonesian mobile phone network operator, needed a space that would show their history and their achievements in a compelling and engaging manner. In their new building, they dedicated a 400 square meter zone for that purpose. Thus transforming the area into a Digital Gallery and Lounge.

The design team looked at the design challenge as an opportunity to do more than just a passive showcase area. Their design solution created a multi-function room that could serve as a gallery, a stage, a video conferencing area, a lounge, and a temporary exhibit zone.

Raul Renanda’s vision was to develop a design that showcased the inner workings of the advanced technological service provider in a manner that diverged from the consumer facing experiences that the public normally engages with.

The design team began with the Telkomsel logo to drive the initial concepts that were derived from hexagonal shapes that were softened to make them feel more approachable and accessible. This was pursued to develop a language which spoke to the evolving business of the client as it grows its services from data transfer to digital media delivery and personal technology driven lifestyle offerings like money transfers, education, and creative content tools. The soft edge hexagon motif breaks into sub-shapes that become the basic form from which floors, walls, column cladding, ceilings, and monitor panels are derived.

One prominent wall serves as a large-scale digital content display that not only functions as a video monitor for information driven interaction, but also becomes part of the environment and displays digital wallpaper treatments when not in dedicated function use.

Hanging from the celling are 2 Drones that were part of the Telkomsel campaign that broadcast live video from coast to coast and all over Indonesia. These Drones are not just display features. The cameras onboard now capture the events on stage and display the feed on the large-scale monitor.

The solution developed by Raul Renanda and the design team incorporates this multi-function exhibition area into the existing built environment  in a manner that blends harmoniously with the exterior design.
