The objective of this project, in conjunction with the L A M P Design Competition 2016, was to design a lamp based on the theme 'Cosmic'.
Cyanea is an ambient table lamp that also acts as a night light and decoration.
My intention is to invoke a sense of wonder, curiosity and amazement in the viewer.
What inspired the design of the lamp, coupled with the theme of Cosmic, is the deep sea. It is filled with animals that are not often seen, as well as many other undiscovered creatures. When I first started conceptualising, it was difficult to arrive at a suitable design that could bring out this intended effect.
However, it gradually assumed a very abstract, organic form that allows people to have their own interpretation of it. The shape of the main body is inspired by jellyfish; the way it moves and drifts in the water creates a direction of flow, which is emphasised by a gradient frosting at the bottom of the lamp.
