Music Access for the Hearing Impaired
Senior Capstone 2016-2017.
My objective is to elevate the music education experience for individuals who are hearing impaired. After my research I realized that it was about "Music Access." My work included an understanding of their current music experience, the emotional, technical and pedagogical aspects of the deaf community and the role music plays in their community.
This project is a work in progress, however I wanted to share some of my on- going research process with you!
1) Interviews. Getting out of my comfort zone.
I have been in situations when I've had trouble communicating (as English is not my first language), however never while doing a research study.
For the first time my research participants are hearing impaired (with different degrees of impairment), which prompted me to get creative with my research methodology. All a learning experience, for sure.
2) Workshop Series. Focus group and Co-Creating.
To further my research, I designed a toolkit for a focus group and co-creation workshops with the Ohio School for the Deaf. Participants are High School students.
I ran a total of three workshops and one more still pending.
1) "CURRENT STATE MUSIC EXPERIENCE" focus group. (Image 1)
2) Based on findings, an "IDEAL COMPLETE SHARED MUSIC EXPERIENCE" canvas to co-create. (Image 3 and 4)
3) "KEEP CALM AND BUILD ON" included a series of materials for participants to co-create their ideal solution based on their previous canvases. (Image 5)
4) My findings will soon be converted and presented into solutions, for validation purposes.
