Roxy Snowboards And Boots

This is the 2008 Roxy snowboard line and a few of the boots. For this project I CD’d and designed the entire product line for Roxy, including 11 boards, 8 boots, and 10 binding graphics.
For the boards I worked with 3 freelancers, 2 studios, and Roxy’s in-house design bucket. The design bucket was a place I could get elements that were created for the Roxy brand and apply them to the snowboard products. The two on the right end and the one on the left end were created from the bucket.

This is the curse that is product graphic development and design. 21 individual boards, 18 binding graphics and material selection, 5-8 boot patterns and color ways. Each board graphic entails the following: top graphic, base graphic, sidewall graphic, tek info print, and individual sizes for each board family. For this job, on average, I would work with 8-10 freelancers and 2 studios per year. The diverse product range gave me the chance to work with people all over the world including such great artists as Shepard Faireyof Obey (US), Caia Koopman (US), Ben Frost (AUS), Jeremyville (AUS), Poked Studios (UK), Dan Munford (UK), and others.

To match or not to match, that is the question. These next two slides show how I am thinking about the big picture as I develop the graphics. It’s important that the men’s boards and bindings go well together but not be a 100% match. On the other hand, the women’s products need to match more closely than the men’s, as research has shown women tend to buy more on looks than technology.

Photo shoots can go super smoothly or they can be a train wreck! Get your research and style boards done well in advance so you do not stress yourself and others out. These next slides are important because show that I was not just creating board graphics. The board graphics were only one section of my workload. These slides are the product images that were used in catalogs and press kits and any other materials needed for the year.

Style Guides For Action Photo Shoot

Photo shoots and action / location shoots are one my favorite things to direct and be a part of. Along with product there are action and life style photo shoots. I normally have 2 of each a year and they can be anywhere from 3 days to 9 or 10, depending on the weather.
I would love to say that I get to go to all of these great locations but I don’t. I give the photographer and team manager the art directions and style guides and let them do their jobs. I do get the joy of seeing all the great places they go to when I have to look over the 1000’s of images they shoot.
