I chose the theme of "Modern Dating" for a surrealism exploration project as part of my continuing education course "The Feeling of Design" at SVA with Sue Walsh. Once a laughable stigma, online and mobile app based dating is becoming a widely accepted norm and increasingly popular. In public we bury our heads in our phones instead of smiling at strangers in front of us and it seems that we have replaced the in-person chance encounters with countless left and right swipes. I chose to literally show couples on physical dates with their potential cyber matches. The visual tension between the couples actually being together yet being separated by the gigantic phone is open to interpretation to the viewer. I created sample posters for a fake dating app to show how the images could potentially be used in advertising.
