The event
Settled first by the Romans and perched on the steep banks of the Douro River estuary in Northern Portugal, Porto became a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1996. With its rich architectural heritage, Porto is linked to the Nova Gaia side and by Eiffel's doubledecker ironwork bridge. This spectacular landscape makes it a favoured tourist location but its steep cobbled streets can be difficult even the hardiest traveller.
The five teams of architects and designers who took part in this first 24 Hour Inclusive Design Challenge in Portugal worked in the 14th Century Corpus Christi Covent on the Nova Gaia side.
The brief
The teams were each assigned tourist routes in the Nova Gaia area either along the river or routes that wound up the steep hill behind towards the port wine storehouses. They were asked to create an inclusive design intervention or set of interventions inspired by their design partner that would radically transform the route for everyone who used it.
The results
Two prizes were awarded - one by a jury headed by Gil Caldicot, Director of the British Council Portugal and the second by the audience.
The jury prize went to multi-faceted series of highly implementable design interventions by Team 4 led by Anselmo Canha working with the athletic wheelchair user Sílvio Nogueira . The People's Choice Award was a tie between Team 4 and Team 2 led by Paulo Bago D'Uva for Gaia Onda - a pontoon that rises and falls with the tide but allows easy access to the tourist riverboats.
