Overall conception, production and scripting of Muxes: a short film documenting
the so called Third Gender of Mexico.
For the second instalment of Define Gender, a new series by Nowness, exploring how gender impacts our lives, Los Angeles-based director Ivan Olita travelled to the remote town of Juchitán in Oaxaca, Mexico to document the world of the “Muxes”, a demographic considered as the country’s third gender. Not being completely exposed to western colonialist idealisms, in these indigenous communities, the world is in fact not divided simply into males and females. The local Zapotec people have made room for this third category, Muxes, individuals who were assigned male at their birth, but consider themselves women and live in a socially sanctioned limbo between the two genders.
