Industrial Design
MIMOAUTONOMOUS MOBILE ROBOT / OCTOBER 2006
A old project from 2nd year uni (so excuse the horrible typography), with an open brief to design for a 'Robot 2050' competition. There are stupid amounts of technology and advanced materials thrown into it (as we all did in uni days) such as spray on solar cells, thrust vector jet-fans, helio displays, ultra sonic sensors, hybrid solar lighting, durgel and morphotone.
The main ability of this flying MAV was to sense fear or danger and start recording the user accordingly. Video would then be streamed to a security service. The idea being that this companion becomes a deterrent for potential criminals to attack or violate people. With the technologies needed for this functionality, its features can be utilised to further enhance the usability.
Follow - Mimo will follow the user, protecting then or allowing them to see the world from a different perspective.
Lead - Mimo will use its GPS to find a friend or family with the same device. Alternatively it can lead you to a specific location.
Record - Mimo can take photos or video from angles never imagined before (distance is restricted for privacy).
Play - Media can be streamed via Mimo to a compatible device or data can be recorded straight to an external device.
Share - Users can share their media or set up their own personal profile, which can be accessed by others. People will always know whose info they can and are viewing, as Mimo is easily visible and allows others to see who it belongs too.
The users also need a Connect device (either Vision or Mini). This acts as an active beacon for stabilisation, but media is also streamed to it via UWB and then beamed over the cellular network to a compatible device, e.g. a mobile phone. It also gives Mimo a base point to create a 3D space with which it can move in. Media can be viewed on Connect Vision via a heliodisplay.
