Vita Contemplative - Gateway to Clerkenwell 2015

Vita Contemplativa
Gateway to Clerkenwell | London

‘Vita Contemplativa’ was created for the 2015 Clerkenwell Design Week. The project aimed to emphasise the identity of Clerkenwell as a place by using historical, architectural elements.
Briefed to re‑evaluate the boundaries and gateways of Clerkenwell, Nicholas Alexander Ltd and Swiss studio Gruppe noted the resemblance of the area’s shape to that of a Roman city and found that it had almost all the ingredients required to be an autonomous hub.
Made out of fibre-cement material Equitone, this series of totems hosts the unexpected nature of street life and also adds some decorum, some time, some space by acting as markers of the district’s margins.
