Dylan Bellamy's profile

21st Century Schizoid Man

My rendition of one of my favourite album covers.

I chose this cover because it conveys the emotion of the song incredibly well. It didn't bother trying to please the eye. I've always been a fan of conveying emotion and the lowlights as opposed to making everything seem happy and polished. I guess this is just one of the areas I try to stand out in. Some people draw landscapes and take pictures of their cups of coffee, while I draw a red, shouting, man who looks like he missed a few trips to the dentist. I didn't even originally mean to make his teeth look *that* bad, I just got impatient with the pen tool.

Nothing was traced in this remake. I originally sketched it on a piece of printer paper for fun, but it eventually spread into a small project for me to do and actually turn into a refined piece of work. When I sketch, I go fast. I don't have time to whip out my .000004in lead pencil and magnifying glass for the first rough sketch. I'm just trying to get the idea across first time a round. I got to the point where I was doing my good copy and I had a hard time with the details, because I skipped over and dismissed them in the rough sketch, so to mask those little areas I put a dot pattern layered over top. This method also helps give it a sort of comic book feel.
