Founded in 2012, Malayan Traders Capital is a boutique hedge fund in Malaysia. When the client first approached us, the brief was a simple one: honour his family’s professional legacy but re-position it in the present, with its sights set on the future.

We began by taking a walk through the company’s history, and we quickly discovered that the firm’s narrative is undoubtedly one that is steeped in heritage. With chapters that span three generations of a single family dating back to the 1930s, there was plenty to work with.

To communicate the brand’s ties to the financial industry, we decided to make the logo round, with two sides – just like a coin. 

It was clear that the firm had very strong values and a solid vision, so we also incorporated those into the logo with three pillars that also were a nod to all three generations of Devan’s family.

We anchored the brand with a stately dark maroon while adding subtle touches of gold to evoke images of prosperity and stability. To further underscore the brand’s persona, we chose to use Plantin, an old-style serif typeface whose history predated the Malayan Traders & Co.’s by just two decades.

We also supplemented the brand’s ties to finance by commissioning portraits of the firm’s founders that used illustration techniques found on money.

Since then, MTC has continued to be a leading boutique finance firm with clients from all over the world, and offices in Singapore and Malaysia.
