Miami Homeless Population Has an Advocate
The leader of Florida Conservation, Inc., and Diversified Management International, Inc., Antonio Junior is also a former president of the Miami Dade Urban Bankers Association. During his tenure, the chapter received the highest honors awarded to members for both community involvement and member development. Antonio Junior continues to work with organizations dedicated to serving families who do not have homes.
Miami has been criticized for its active litigation against citizens who do not have homes. In 2013, the City of Miami asked the federal courts to reverse the Pottinger ruling from 1998 that forbade the police from harassing people without homes. The city wanted permission to arrest these individuals and take them to jail to remove them from the streets. The ACLU and the city agreed to a settlement, but the affected individuals lost the right to make shelters on public property and build fires for warmth or to cook. It is technically still a crime to live outside of a home in Florida.
