Mono no aware is a Japanese term for the awareness of impermanence, or transience of things. It is expressed through a mix of wistfulness and celebration, ultimately leading to a deeper sense of gratitude toward experience and a fuller embrace of existence. This is expressed in the work by a procession of symbols depicting observation (eye) that leads to emotion (tear), deeper contemplation (cosmos), and ultimately embrace of life (the sun).
