Broadway Malyan
Whilst working for Broadway Malyan I had alot of involvement with the project for Sir John Deane’s College in Northwhich. The brief was to improve the college’s existing accommodation which in some cases had only been built ten years previous. Particular attention was given to the individual requirements of the differing subjects and classroom environments.

My involvement was from early design and concept stages through to planning. Working closely with the project architect I was involved with concept development for the scheme which ultimately were manifest in the completed building. I also accompanied the project architect on several site visits and meetings with the college’s teaching staff to develop an understanding of their individual specifications. The project also required a decant strategy to allow smooth running of the college during building. I produced several options for this and worked up the final strategy.

Concept

A concept for the building was to reflect salt crystals within the arrangement and aesthetic of the building. This idea came about when researching the history and context of Northwhich which is located on and around salt mines.

A fragmented plan along an "indoor street" and the use of materials tie into this concept, translucent walls appear to glow like a crystaline salt structure. Sharp geometries in the facade of the LRC also emphasise this concept.
