ŽIVLJENJE NA DOTIK magazine - covers

Življenje na dotik magazine - COVERS
Monthly magazine produced for MARIBOR 2012 - EUROPEAN CAPITAL OF CULTURE
The content of the magazine is not just a brochure for the programme of the European capital of Culture, but a deeply coherent and structured reading giving wider context to the programme and the sociological, antropoligical, historical view on the city of Maribor and entire Region trespassing Slovenian borders - to the European level.
One of the pillars of the monthly magazine are the essays written by renowned authors (journalists, essayists, novelist, etc) from the broather region (Balcans, Hungary, Austria, Italia, etc.) giving some introspection to European diseases and opportunities.

THE CONCEPT FOR THE COVER

My proposal was to amplify the messages renowned names are giving in the texts from Perspectives & reflections. The idea was to choose each month a quote by one of the authors text inside the magazine and make a visual interpretation out of it, based on typography.

The back cover is reserved for the quote in a less "spectacular" way - just plain quote on a coloured backgroud featured by all necessary data.

Till the beginning of this year - five editions were published.
Logo
Logo is a combination of initials of the words Življenje na dotik (Lifetouch) and the hybrid pointing hand crossing the line of character N.
The magazine is produced to be a link between printed information and content available online – on our website. That's why I used this hybrid pointing hand as acentral symbol of the logo. From print to digital.
The mark is used also in the inner pages to accompany the articles which has their extension on the website.

(6 more issues are planned till the end of the year 2012)
ISSUE 1 (January 2012)
This was an interpretation of the quote from the essay written by Vaclav Havel.
The shallow translation goes something like this:
"Collective anger is like a funnel that sucks all, who are prone to individual anger.

ISSUE 2 (February 2012)
An interpretation of the quote from the essay written by hungarian author Tibor Keresztury. He cited a gipsy woman from a small hungarian village.
The shallow translation goes something like this:
"Scrolling to the bottom is hard. It's a pain. Once you are there without nothing, it's already allright.

I decided to use scans of zeros (00000) from different bills to write this fragile statement.
ISSUE 3 (March 2012)
An interpretation of the quote from the essay written by norwegian author Thomas Hylland Eriksen.
The shallow translation goes something like this:
"Unity is strength. Ignorance is a bliss.

Fot this controversial quote I decided to use stamps of the shoes to represent, what a strength of a mass of ignorant people can provoke. Stampedo???
ISSUE 4 (April 2012)
An interpretation of the quote from the essay written by italian author Claudio Magris.
The shallow translation goes something like this:
"Fear is tough prison, which suppress all forms of freedom. "

Fot this intense quote I decided to incorporate different types of lockers it the characters. But to show that fear is mostly unjustified, I decided to put some absurd elements - The funny baubaus made of plasticine popping out the paper.
ISSUE 5 (May 2012)
An interpretation of the quote from the essay written by croatian author Robert Perišić.
The quote used for the cover is just a small part of entire quote, which is written on back cover and of course in the text inside the magazine.
The text talk about transition in postcommunist countries. And how privatization works here.

The visual interpretation I made is a little abstract. But can be read something like this: People were suddenly converted to the level of products and when you are not necessary to the system anymore, you are smashed and thrown away. Like a tetrapak of juice... Here is the parabola - What is to be done? is a big question which it will be heavily responded by people who are smashed, exhausted, robbed of dignity - without life juice (if we are poetic).
