3rd Year Semester 1 - With the focus on religion, focus on research of the religious requirements of their buildings was of importance. Religions have their own requirements, etiquettes and rules regarding function of the building. Islamic religion requires "cleansing" before entering prayer room. A cleansing space for visitors was a key internal design point with the religion there is focus on the separation of men and women. Men and Women were given their own storage, cleansing spaces and prayer space.
External design focus was to use local resource. A timber building was designed. Aesthetic of the building was to mimic colour scheme of the Kaaba in Mecca. Orientation of the building made the largest wall in prayer hall to face direction of Mecca. The slits created by the burnt larch external skin created a unique atmosphere along the internal pathway leading to the building and shadows were enhanced with use of larch horizontal panel cladding for main building.
