I was recently commissioned to reproduce the original logo artwork a company had printed on t-shirts (back in the 70s).

I was given a photo that was of their past employees, and I cropped it to the original t-shirt to show what I worked with. After some time and a bit of artistic license (as parts of it are too small/blurred to make out) I made a logo they were excited to have again.
