DESIGNING SYSTEMS FOR URBAN CATTLE WASTE MANAGEMENT

The project aimed at efficiently managing the daily wasted cattle dung from an urban cattle shed. There are 300 cattle sheds in Pune and nearly 7 cows in each one of them. A cattle produces 10 kg dung everyday, therefore 21,000 kg dung is obtained from the cow-sheds all together. All of this is either drained or thrown into the community garbage bin everyday. So the question came up , ‘How do we make sure it is not wasted?’
While doing the project, we questioned each other 'Why save cattle dung, is it any good?'We found out that Cow dung is extensively used in the villages. Half way through the research we realized how useful it is. Not only is it an efficient source of biogas, but also good for the soil and a good raw material for paper, bricks and such.

Our approach

Cattlesheds we visited in the city and outskirts of Pune.

Catte Sheds of Pune / Catte Sheds on the outskirts of Pune
1. The cattle sheds in the city were found to be congested, in the middle of residential areas while on the outskirts are open and better environments for both cattle and humans.
2. The sheds in the city were found to be disorganised because of lack of space, whereas, the sheds outside the city were organised and clean.
3. The sheds in the city disposed off the waste in drains, bins & even on the roads near the residential areas as opposed to the ones in the outskirts where all the waste was used either as manure, vermicompost or even for plastering walls and making coils to kill mosquitos.

Where can we use this dung, instead?

Who can be involved?

Experiments with dung

All the experiments were carried out with dung as a raw material in small scale industries for its various uses.

This system aims at value for waste. The cattle shed owner gets his money for dung and stops throwing it in the garbage bin and the society people utilise the kitchen waste as well.
