Sirius (named CD Radio in its research and development phase) approached Interbrand for a rebranding in time for their public debut. As creative lead on the project, I recommended a whimsical approach based on the ancient identification of Sirius as the Dog Star, to counter then-rival XM Radio’s utilitarian brand.

With the acquisition of Union 76 and Conoco, the new ConocoPhillips Company required a top down brand consolidation without sacrificing individual brand equities. FutureBrand proposed the simple solution of keeping the exisiting brand marks while retrofitting all three station lines with a single system design in red and white. I created a road motif graphic for the Conoco brand as a practical solution to the disparity in the sister brands’ visual “footprints.” (Early studies at left.)

Founded in the summer of 2008, Anza began selling “upcycled” solar cookers and water sanitation solutions in Pemba, Mozambique, in June 2009. Anza develops low-cost technologies and builds private sector supply chains to deliver their products to impoverished Africans in a scalable and sustainable manner. Anza is the Swahili word for “start,” and economic empowerment for the bottom billion starts here.

My goal here was to depict the essence of the generational strife within the feminist movement as described in Deborah Siegel’s book (2007, Palgrave) in a simple but evocative manner.

Hokum is a vehicle for my commentary on image, narrative and identity in contemporary American media. The name and design invoke the tension between naive wonder and cynical hucksterism: both extremes were well represented in the Victorian age, and are hallmarks of technology and progress to this day.

John Zachar is a Chicago architect who often collaborates with his wife, interior designer Elizabeth (Busy) Zachar. I suggested a partner brand approach for their businesses. The “Za” abbreviation evokes the simplicity and essential quality of a periodic table element, in keeping with the firm’s streamlined, modern approach.

Alere was created by medical innovators to improve healthcare through greater clarity and a collaborative relationship with the patient or customer. I developed a few logo directions for the penultimate presentation to Alere. The ribbon concept symbolizes integrated services as well as the seamless collaborative relationship between provider and patient. Transparency, momentum and colors evoking dynamic life processes provide further emotional resonance.

To keep in step with a rapidly changing communications environment, Dex Media was ready to overhaul and rebrand their online entity in 2008; Dex Online became DexKnows, leveraging the equity of the Dex mascot. Dex Media asked Verse Group to explore an evolution of the character and the brand identity. The new mascot concepts were designed for eliciting focus group reactions, tools for establishing parameters within which to create the final brand expression of DexKnows. The owl was intended to gauge group participants’ associations attached to Pixar-esque characters.

Bancomer, one of the largest banks in Mexico, opted to retain their 70’s era logo, a geometric rendering of a flag, upon their re-branding. The new visual system is based on a gentle wave which evokes the tactile and emotional qualities we associate with flags. I developed the motif for their matrix of card-based offerings, categorized by customer segment (business, student, commercial, road travel, etc.)

MasterCard International engaged Interbrand for a top down refinement of their brand architecture and a new consistent, coherent literature system. In addition to helping in the design and application the new system across a range of literature formats, I redesigned the classic MasterCard brand mark for greater visual impact and legibility beyond print media; I also developed concepts for individual MasterCard products such as the World Card.

Cutting down silos: MasterCard International's literature system underwent a global overhaul with the direct collaboration and consent of the managers of the various marketing and communications divisions, who met on a bi-weekly basis at Interbrand's offices for the duration of the design process. Agency: Interbrand
