J.C. Penney approached SCAD seeking an innovative solution to an old problem, plastic bags. I lead a four person interdisciplinary team in the search of the most sustainable, affordable, accessible, and most importantly receptive solution. After the sponsored class I continued my work to design a comprehensive solution to the growing social and economic issue. When faced with the plastic bag problem, the natural inclination is to design a reusable bag. However, when I really looked at the insights from the research I saw that there is a much more viable solution; and there is a particular way in which that solution should and shouldn't be marketed. With that in mind I designed a fun, interactive plastic bag return kiosk and a strategy grounded in incentives, changing habits, and building connections.
