Cocaine Typography Installation

One of the first projects I did on my Art Foundation course was this idea for a typographical installation. We were given a starting point of the colour 'white' and from there I thought of all the things I could that came to mind when thinking of white. One of the things that came up was Cocaine. As with many other drugs there is a lot of conflict surrounding it, which I decided to further investigate.

Upon further research I found out the huge impact the cocaine trade has on many countries, especially Mexico where it is estimated that 70,000 deaths since 2006 have been linked to the Cocaine trade along with 70 kidnappings per month.

My idea for this installation was to create the classic Cocaine user scene, the Cocaine laid out on the toilet seat with a razor blade and a rolled up bank note. It is quite strong and sobering imagery, but it fits the strong reality behind the Cocaine trade. In reality there is a lot more violence and conflict behind drugs than just the user's conflict.
I had to make a mock-up of this piece in Photoshop seeing as I wouldn't be able to take up a public toilet for such a long amount of time. To create the font I used sherbet powder to give the look of cocaine.
