COLORS MAGAZINE
FREEDOM OF SPEECH

Attempting to redesign the issue "Freedom of Speech" of COLORS Magazine to be trilingual, I chose to focus on the idea of identity loss that is caused by lack of freedom of speech. I aimed to express this concept through the idea of how one's finger print represents one's identity. The laser cut of finger print on the cover of the magazine reflects and illustrates how the identities of people, living in different countries worldwide, are partially lost due to being silenced or having their opinions/point of views ignored. The name of the magazine is illustrated in a designed nameplate that incorporates the translations of the title “Colors” in both Arabic and Chinese scripts. For a stronger statement, I wanted the finger print to occupy the entire cover so I created a transparent sleeve that has the nameplate printed on in black, so that the laser cut would still be visible to the reader or holder of the magazine.

As for the magazine’s content, it also incorporates Latin, Chinese and Arabic scripts. This coexistence of the three scripts adds to the idea of how the censoring of freedom of speech is a notion that is suffered by people of different nationalities in the Arab World, Far East, and West. On each page, the names of the countries, page numbers, as well as parts of the text are written in all 3 scripts.

Although suffered in different countries, the level of freedom of speech varies from one country to another. The extent of this difference is illustrated according to each country’s number on the list of World Freedom of Press Ranking. On each page, a finger print stands beside the name and number of the country. The bigger the number, the more the fingerprint is faded and blurred, illustrating the weakness of the identity due to insufficient freedom of speech.
