Editorial Illustrations
I was appointed to create two Editorial spot illustrations for one of two given articles: “Are Video Games Art?” and “Sociology in Fantasia.” The objective was to chose one of  the articles and design two artworks that represented either a word, quote, or subhead that stood out to me from the chosen piece of literature. The artworks were meant to be cohesive in style, color choices and had to combine aspects of fine art and game art. For my editorial spot illustrations I chose the article “Are Video Games Art?” The sentence from that article that influenced my theme was “video games have been attacked for either causing or aggravating all the sins of the modern world.” These words inspired me to create the concept of illustrating video game characters and have them represent two of the seven sins in the form of satire. I chose three Nintendo characters: Kirby, Birdo, and Yoshi to portray the sins lust and gluttony. I decided to use these characters because Nintendo is know for being kid friendly so that played off of my satire theme well. Some of the features on the characters I over exaggerated to add to the satire such as giving Kirby sharp teeth to make him appear more threatening and putting Birdo in a provocative pose to sell the lust going on between her and Yoshi. In the background of each illustration I tried to display the fine art aspect of the objective by creating painterly-like brush strokes and smudges. The color palette was chosen by taking colors from the characters themselves and incorporated  pink, purple, and blue tones in both pieces to tie them together.
