Yonsei-INDEX: Design To Improve Life Summer School
My Summer in Seoul, Korea
In the summer of 2011, I participated in a summer design program at Yonsei University in Korea, led by INDEX: Design to Improve Life. One hundred students from all over the world collaborated in interdisciplinary design teams that were focused on the eight United Nations Millenium Development Goals.
After participating in an open space brainstorming session, each student chose an area that interested them to focus their work. Throughout the course we learned this and many other process facilitation methods.
My design team chose to work within the theme of equality. From this broad theme, we narrowed our focus to elderly equality in Seoul, Korea. Once we got into our small groups, we began to develop the skills to communicate with each other despite cultural differences and language barriers.
As a group, we developed many concept maps and discussed our options. My responsibilities included gathering data and analyzing research. I wrote the copy for all of our posters and was also partly responsible for planning our weekly presentations, as well as our final presentation.
Our design team was:

Kelli Bauman
Heidi Lyng
Eunsun Joo
Benjamin Buus Pedersen
Eunhae Shin
Once a week, we met with our elective course. I participated in a group dedicated to producing urban art that would improve life on campus. In this group, I often acted as an organizational task manager and facilitator who worked hard to make sure everyone was always on the same page.

Proposal presentation for urban art installation, presented to the dean of Yonsei University for approval. I was responsible for the layout of this document.
We spent the day before installation dying thick ropes a rainbow of colors.
 Shade String: urban art installation.
On the last day of the program, we said goodbye by recording memories from our entire process on a sheet of paper the size of the room.

Participating in the program was enlightening to me. Not only did I become empowered and enabled to improve lives, I learned processes and design methods that set me apart. Most importantly, I developed meaningful and valuable relationships with people I will keep in touch with for the rest of my life from around the world.
