For What It's Worth
Platinum Group Metals
The platinum mining industry was established in 1924, but has left an indelible mark on South Africa’s more recent history. These photographs were taken at the now infamous koppie at Marikana, where police opened fire on a group of striking mineworkers on 16 August 2012, killing 34 men and injuring 78 others. Against this backdrop, I’ve placed CGI representations of the total national output of all six of the platinum group metals.

Platinum - 136 million troy ounces
Palladium - 66 million troy ounces
Osmium - 3 million troy ounces
Iridium - 4 million troy ounces
Ruthenium - 19 million troy ounces
Rhodium - 13 million troy ounces
