Symmetrical Number Stamp

The Dutch Symmetrical Number Stamp
––––––

Step into the captivating world of stamp design with the project – “The Dutch Symmetrical Number Stamp, 2010”. Inspired by the renowned works of Hansje van Halem, Wim Crouwel, and Jan van Krimpen, this design endeavor focuses on creating two new number stamps – '1' and '2' – that symbolize a harmonious interplay of form and function.

As the project unfolded, the design initial spark came from the notion that the value of '1' is precisely half of '2.' This led to the idea of crafting symmetrical stamps that could be split into two, akin to cutting an object in perfect equilibrium. The challenge, however, was in transforming the curviness of '2' into the more angular shape of '1,' making it a true visual representation of both numerals.

After numerous sketches exploring abstract concepts, an unconventional yet intriguing system began to take shape. It toyed with the daring notion of eliminating the '2' stamp altogether, relying solely on the '1' stamp to represent various values by combining them. Amidst this exploration, the designer circled back to the core objective – a visibly symmetrical number stamp. With the use of a triangle grid, it creates an ambiguous dimensions, delightfully blending '1' and '2' in one captivating design.

Intriguingly, the journey didn't end there. Initially planning to produce only the '1' stamp, it was decided to include the '2' as well, considering practicality and ease of use. The project achieved its goal – a representation of value balance through symmetrical design principles. The chosen color palette is straight-forward, it was drawn from the De Stijl movement, added depth and historical significance to the Dutch stamps.
