Appalachian Trail Conservancy Trail Crews

Outside of her work as a lawyer focusing on complex civil litigation, Lisa M. Nousek contributes to a number of charitable organizations. For example, Lisa M. Nousek supports the Appalachian Trail Conservancy (ATC).

The mission of the ATC is to protect and maintain the Appalachian Trail, the National Scenic Trail that extends from Maine to Georgia. The group does this in a variety of ways, including promoting volunteerism and sustainability as well as fundraising and educating the public about the hiking trail. It is a nonprofit organization that was founded in 1925.

The ATC runs volunteer “trail crews” that spend a week or more in the wilderness working to maintain the trail through such labor-intensive activities as clearing pathways, maintaining campsites, rebuilding collapsing shelters, and constructing bridges. There are six crews, each serving a different section of the 2,190-mile trail, and they are active from May to October.

Crews are led by professional trail guides employed by the ATC. While camp life and labor in all the crews is rugged and physically demanding, the crews are divided into three categories by difficulty: Moderate, Moderate to Difficult, and Very Difficult.
