What is radiation therapy?

Radiation therapy is one of the most common treatments used to treat cancer. This therapy uses high-energy particles or waves such as electron beams, x-rays, gamma rays or protons to destroy or damage cancer cells in the patient’s body. Radiation therapy is also referred as radiotherapy, irradiation, or x-ray therapy.

Radiation therapy is also combined with other treatments such as surgery or chemotherapy to provide more positive results. For treating cancer, certain drugs are also available which are known as radiosensitizers. These drugs can make cancer cells in the body more sensitive to radiation and help radiation therapy to kill cancer cells more effectively. There are also different ways to give radiation. Sometimes a patient gets more than one type of radiation treatment for same cancer.

How does radiation therapy work?

The goal of radiation therapy is to kill cancer cells in the body without damaging the normal cells. Special equipment’s are used in this therapy that utilizes ahigh dose of radiations to kill the cancer cells. Mostly normal cells in the body grow and divide to form new cells whereas cancer cells grow and divide faster than normal cells. The radiation breaks the DNA inside the cancer cells. The broken DNA keeps the cancer cells from dividing and growing further also in some cases they cause the cancer cells to die.Nearby normal cells can also be affected by radiation therapy, but most of these cells are recovered back.

Types of radiation therapy

There are 3 ways in which Radiation therapy is given:-
·         Internal radiation.
·         External radiation.
·         Systemic radiation.
In some cases, more than one type of radiation is used. The type of radiation used depends on the kind of cancer the patients has its location and overall health of the patient.

Effects of radiation therapy

Radiation therapy is not only used to treat breast, prostate, thyroid and many other types of cancer but it also treats some non-cancerous diseases.
Radiation therapy affects cancer by:-

·         Stopping the growth of the cancer cells.
·         Slowing the growth of cancer cells in the body.
·         Shrinking the tumors.
·         Killing the remaining cancer cells that are left behind.
·         To prevent cancer from recurring in future.

Radiation therapy can be used before, during, or after the surgery. Sometimes doctors give radiation during surgery so the radiation can be directed right at the cancer cells without having to go through the skin. Radiation therapy is also combined with chemotherapy in some cases.
