Shadow and Bone: Title Sequence

A video I made for a class project in my motion graphics class. I took one of my favorite book trilogies "Shadow and Bone" by Leigh Bardugo and made a title sequence to its fictional television series.
I used a certain type (Assassin by  by Alphabet & Type on Dafont.com) for the title sequences to produce a rustic and elegant feeling for the opener. This was important because in the book, Bardugo based her world on Russian folklore which is skriptive and contains serif type font.
For the main title, I wanted an extreme nod to Russia and found an elegant, but bold Russian font called Kremlin Advisor Display Kaps by Bolt Cutter Design-Industrial Strength on Dafont.com.
The overall theme was light versus dark in a world of magic. Darkness, to me, was always inky and thick- so what better way to display the Darkling’s magic? Ink of course! I overlayed images of moving footage which was all found at http://www.videvo.net/ with ink. Not only is light versus dark a theme in the book, but life and death as well. So bones- which are also important factors in the book(they serves as amplifiers to a Grisha’s magic).
Another motif in Shadow and Bones is the feeling of displacement. The main character Alina feels either claustrophobic or displaced in the book- never truly comfortable where she is- so I wanted to enclose images within larger images. For instance, with Kellan Lutz, he is a hunter and an adventurer, so I portrayed him in wilderness and the cold mountains which is where they are running most of the book.
I think my favorite use of this overlay technique was with the stag and the ink. Spoiler alert, the white stag dies, slashed through the neck by the Darkling- this the ink coming out of the Stags neck in the credits.
I used a golden color of the text to portray the light in the darkness, and to contrast with dark cold hues throughout most of the title sequence.
I chose the cast I did because I was able to easily see them being these characters, especially Holland Roden as Alina- what with her hallowed out look and large eyes.
