Dutch Design Posters | Amsterdam Study Abroad

The following posters were created as a class requirement for a study abroad trip to Amsterdam, Netherlands in summer 2015. The trip had an emphasis of Dutch design and we were to design posters that reflected my experience of the trip. After arrival back to the states, these posters were screenprinted at UMSL, where experience with color separation, burning screens, and screenprinting were learned. These posters were featured in a group exhibition, Visie Van Amsterdam, at Gallery Visio at UMSL in August & September in 2015.
Rules of Going Dutch
This poster was designed using collage work that I created on the trip. I was inspired by the ferry ride to NSDM from Centraal in Amsterdam. On the trip, we visited multiple design firms and met fellow designers in Amsterdam. They gave us snippets of advice which I set in the strips of paper in my collage. I framed the piece which allowed for a more stable composition.
Utrecht
For this piece, I was inspired by the buildings in Amsterdam. They were so crammed together and often tilted. There were a few posters in the series in which I experimented with offset printing giving the design more character. I was also inspired by my favorite artist, Piet Mondrian. I appreciate his use of minimalist design and philosophy that art should bring piece and not always have meaning. Within the spaces of the building I created icons representing work of two Dutch artists that I came to appreciate, Dick Bruna and Gerrit Rietveld. I also created custom type that spelled out a popular city where these artists' work was seen, Utrecht. I chose to design the type in a De Stijl art style.
