SQUISH | Environmental Type | Imagemaking

“Squish” was an environmental type project created by Alicia Arnold, Dillon Sinasky, and Melinda Schmidt. Requirements for this project were to create a single word out of unconventional materials and to install it in a location where people can interact and appreciate the piece in a personal way.

For this project, we decided that “squish” was an appropriate word to create because of the materials we chose, repurposed sponge scraps from a cleaning supply factory. We decided to keep the sponges their original yellow color and to contrast it with a bright turquoise blue photo backdrop. To create this word we started by cutting the letters out of foam board to allow for easy hanging on the wall. We then affixed the first layer of sponges to the foam board to create and even layer. We also covered the edges so the foam board would not show through. After the base layer, we then randomized the placement of sponges, varying in height, width and depth to give dimension to the letters. These letters extruded from the wall approximately 6 inches.

For the location, we chose to install this piece in the lower level of the Fine Arts Building at UMSL. We chose this location to create an additional environment where students can relax as this piece was installed during final exam week. We thought that the contrasting colors of blue and yellow would provide an inviting environment for students to do as the word stated, “squish.” We added a table and chairs for students to sit and provided foods that were yellow in color such as Twinkies, Lemonheads, bananas, and Starburst to complete this cafe-like environment. We observed students interacting with the piece and squishing the letters to relieve stress. This uplifted their mood and made exam period easier.
