All In The Suit That You Wear

This is a first stab at attempting to find my own voice and style.

I’ve always had a hard time finding a way to prompt myself to create art. I’ve had this long standing block of not being able to be creative without a specific assignment, goal or brief to fulfill. I've been stuck like this for almost 3 frustrating years now. I recently attended a lecture by designer Becky Simpson, and I was re-inspired by her simple message, "Starting somewhere now is better than starting somewhere later." And you know what, I felt a lot of the weight and pressure lifted off.

This was prompted by the passing of singer Scott Weiland, formerly of the Stone Temple Pilots. Oddly enough, I was only a casual fan of the group, but re-visited them upon Weiland’s passing. This song in particular struck me as it deals with how we hide our true selves from the outside world. We wear a facade or “suit” so that we don’t have to reveal to others - even to ourselves - who we really are. The song also deals with themes of powerlessness and addiction and the constant internal struggle from both. This was ultimately a battle Weiland wasn’t able to win.
