Here it is––all my secret wizardry I’ve been hoarding from the common Spotify User. Before reading on, ready yourself. Geared with these pivotal tips and hints, your Spotify listening experience may be changed forever. For the better? Now that’s debatable. I will tell you this––at times, multitasking will be an uphill battle. With your up and coming playlist at the forefront of your mind, half-ass background listening to Spotify won’t be easy. But with a finely tuned ear, self control, and a little more self control, you should be just fine.

Disclaimer aside, I present to you: Making a baller Spotify playlist.

You thematic genius, you.
First things first, set the mood. Ask yourself, is this the backdrop to a swanky dinner party or the backdrop to a cringingly sweaty basement frat party? Because contrary to common belief––there is certainly a difference there. Not feeling moody? Don’t fret, been there. Another jumping off point is to pick a common thread and run with it. Decide what it’s going to be: a collection of songs with funky bass lines, spoken songs, songs that whistle? Whatever it may be––embrace it wholeheartedly and stick with it.

Your next step is to name this harmonic masterpiece. I tend to get a little weird with my naming conventions but being straightforward with your playlist title is 100% acceptable. Examples from my personal repository include: “Sans words”... a group of songs without words. “That’s all folks” includes all folk and bluegrass songs and “Bell bottom boogying” is an undeniably catchy alliteration for all the quality disco beats.

Tip from the pro: I keep my playlist private until ready to unveil it and all of it’s glory. No sneak peeks for any of my six followers.

Channel your inner Google search methods.
Time to get this playlist rolling. Where to start? Think about every time someone has told you, “I don’t know, maybe you should Google it.” Your steps preceding this useless and obvious answer typically begin with getting on Google and typing verbatim the question you had asked. Channel those steps when making a Spotify playlist. Making a funky bass line playlist? You know what to do! Spotify search bar: funky bass lines.

Looking to dig deeper? I sure am. Time to take this quest for the perfect Spotify playlist to all the deepest corners of the web. Do a little word association with mood and themes. Funky bass lines: what are the first things you think of? For me, it’s easy: Red Hot Chili Peppers, Soul Train, and jam bands––we all know the bassist brings the funk. Take your web of words and get Googling! Look into movie soundtracks, billboard charts, other playlists, Reddit threads, and wherever the infamous Google rabbit hole takes you.

Remember, it’s not all about the hunt either. Raid your personal inventory of tunes. If you’re making a swanky dinner playlist, you don’t need Google to tell you Nina Simone better be making an appearance.

Tip from the pro: Don’t take other’s playlists as gospel. It might have an audible bass line––but is it funky?

Put your jammy pants on.
Time to enjoy the fruits of your labor. Put it on shuffle or listen to it straight through. This playlist is your sweet-sounding showpiece and you do what you want. Catch a song that feels out of place? Take it out. Adding and maintaining is an ongoing process––like a true work of art, is there ever a proper finish?

Alas, your turn to give Spotify DJ-ing a whirl. Determine what your playlist will be all about, commit to your theme, delve into your personal music library, surf the web and Spotify for commonalities. And always remember––any time you’re grooving, there is playlist potential. Keep those ears tuned in for the next best addition to your up and coming playlist.
