Crimson Peak - Trailer
Director Guillermo del Toro’s new film Crimson Peak is a visual treat that skilfully weaves together the best of Gothic romance and horror. With its richly textured environments, enigmatic characters, dark secrets, sinister ghosts and tense plot, this film leaps off the screen and Comflix immediately saw the potential for a great motion comic trailer.
Having worked with Territory’s motion graphics studio on several previous projects, Comflix once again called on the team to come up with an original and eye-catching concept that would support del Torro’s vision for the film and tie in with Legendary Pictures and Universal Studio’s promotional campaign.
Knowing that del Torro wanted to promote Crimson Peak with a delicate subtlety that alluded to the nature of the film without giving anything away, creative director David Sheldon-Hicks turned to the film’s themes of crimson, romance, blood, ghosts and the dark brooding house for inspiration.
“We wanted the narrative and look of the sequence to add something extra to the Crimson Peak universe without giving anything away”, says David. The resulting trailer is beautiful and disturbing in equal measure, drawing on the rich Gothic imagery of the sinister house in a snowy landscape as a backdrop to a flow of crimson liquid that carves delicate images in the white drifts.
Because Territory built everything in CGI, most of the work was about making the visual elements feel organic and other-worldly. We wanted real atmosphere and tension to properly reflect the film’s own characteristics.
Says David of the project, “This has been another great project for us in collaboration with Comflix, Legendary and Universal. Each partner wanted the best creative possible and the team here at Territory really enjoyed the challenge. And Guillermo del Torro’s universe was so visually rich and beautiful that it was a gift of a project to work on”.
