Metamodern Sounds in Country Music
Studio album by Sturgill Simpson

I met Sturgill in Nashville Tennessee December 17th 2013.  A mutual friend of ours, Jason Leslie wanted us to meet and took us and our families out to eat at  Mason's, where Jason's friend Brandon Frohne was of course the Chef.  When I first met Sturgill, I had no idea who he was, but by the end of the night we were buddies.  Later that night he played the roughs of was going to be his new record and I was blown away, I actually liked it and was relieved because there's nothing more awkward than being in a position like that and not liking the music while pretending that you do.
Shortly after returning to Chicago, I received an email from him, asking if I would be interested in painting the cover of his new record.  I wanted to, but wasn't sure because I was heading to my parents house for Christmas and he needed final artwork in less than a week.  Once I was at my parents house, we began texting back and forth about what the cover should feel like.  Once we had the idea down, I felt that I could do it as soon as I got back home.  I took pictures of myself posed as how I was envisioning his expression as well as the angle that I wanted and then Sturgill's wife took pictures of him on her iPhone and texted them back to me.  By the time I made it back to Chicago, I only had a couple days to finish the artwork.  It was a blast getting to work on it, and an honor to have worked with Sturgill.  He's a great guy, and an awesome song writer.
After the release of the record, Sturgill won several music awards and was nominated for a grammy, so one of the cool things for me was watching his sucess, and getting to see my artwork shown at the Grammy's, as well as on T.V. shows like David Letterman, Jimmy Fallon, Jimmy Kimble, and Conan O' Brian.
