Pantone Freshlog

Pantone as the world-renowned authority on color believes that color can better our life. Pantone is important for designers, manufacturers and retailers, but currently they don’t have an effective platform to communicate directly to consumers.

The world uses most resources to produce food, while ⅓ of food produced is wasted. 50% of this wastage occur at home, date labels leads 9 out of 10 people to throw away food when more than half of it is still edible. In general, it is fine to consume foods past the date stamps. “Use by”, “best before,” and “display until” all have a different meaning. While consumers buy products based on the date labels, there is actually no guarantee of its quality. Storage condition is what determines a food’s life the most. On the other hand food products doesn’t always come with a date label, making it harder to assess.

Biggest factors in assessing a food’s life are taste, smell, and color. While smell and taste is easier, colors give a more detailed information. But, it is more complicated and difficult since people have different color sensitivity and conditions like color deficiency or color blindness.
FreshLog is an application that help users determine a food’s life. It analyzes fruits, vegetables, and meats through photos. By reading the dominant colors, gradients, and textures it will generate information on how long the product could last, best use for it at its current states, and recommended storage conditions. With its various usage it will appeal to a wide audience, such as housewives, kids, university students to chefs.

Through Freshlog, Pantone will help people to make better choices to reduce food wastage, be socially responsible, shows that colors can give us important information to better our life and connects to the audience at consumer level.
