Timun Mas is an interactive shadow box theatre with 4 different background settings which enables children to explore and experience shadow to create their own stories. The toy is based on adaptation of Indonesian folklore story “Timun Mas” (Golden Cucumber), tells about an adventure of brave children chased by giant.
This shadow box theatre has color changing LED light bulb inside. Children can choose 32 variations of light color they want, play with the mood, and develop their own play, just like stage designer on a theatre! Growing up with influences from “Wayang Kulit” (Indonesian shadow puppet theatre), I have always been interested in the nature of shadow and storytelling. Regarding the experiences and curiosity, this toy is an early step for me to develop playable product designed for children living in remote areas of Indonesia, where electricity is rarely available. This shadow box theatre is a project from Play & Signal course of my master degree in Child Culture Design.
A collaboration with Alphons Ålberg Kulturhus Göteborg,
and inspired by everyday life philosophy from the story of Alphons.
