Client: Nev The Barber
Project: Branding & Store Design

Context:
As the name suggests, Nev The Barber is a men's grooming salon started by a guy named Neville. Being a proudly born-and-raised son of Durban, Nev wanted the store to radiate the notoriously casual and friendly essence of the city while pushing against the sterile world of established salons.

Action:
By pairing graphics inspired by painted signage on the tents of local roadside-barbers; with copy thick with Durban-specific slang and humour; we aimed to create a welcoming, approachable brand and space that resonated with the locals it served.

Role: Creative Director, Designer, Sign-painter
Taking from this local inspiration, I created unique typefaces and illustrations that spoke to the visual language of the city. Various stationary and digital elements were then developed culminating in the final store design. To emphasise the casual nature of the brand and further disassociate from mainstream salons, I hand painted signage and detailing trough out the store.

And Then?
Years later, NTB is still going strong and continuing to open additional locations, sporting the original feel and aesthetic.

Thanks.
