Duality - Balanced Forces (The Great Wave)

In 2014, Cafe Bureau approached me for a commission artwork for their cafe. The cafe is heavily influenced by cafes in Tokyo, with warm lights, open spaces, minimal furniture and white walls. The cafe wanted a Japanese inspired artwork to be hung on their walls. The image of the great wave of Kanagawa was shared and it was totally agreed that this would be the subject of the artwork.
There have been a lot of reimagining of the original artwork and I feel that I've to keep the true meaning of it, which the sheer force of a tsunami hitting a coast with boats rocking in the between waves.
My design process went all over place as you can see on how many treatments it went through, but I finally settled on the idea of how balance plays an integral in nature.

And plus, with the idea that yin and yang is really deeply rooted in the asian culture, it felt like a no-brainer for me.
