The Boulders at Exeter

The Boulders at Exeter Continuing Care Community
Exeter, New Hampshire
The boulder-strewn wooded site was adjacent to the existing Riverwoods CCRC, and the new development was a planned expansion with its own character and amenities.  The plan preserved as much as possible of the site character and natural resources, and compensated with substantial areas of native vegetation with wildlife food and shelter value.

The landscape design created several distinct open spaces for enjoyment of the residents.  The arrival court oval is also a space for outdoor events; the formal dining room garden is a perennial and herb garden tended by the resident's garden club; and the assisted living garden is a more private, flower filled space.  The informal perennial gardens next to the Independent Living wing provide year-round interest; and the wood-chips trail connects to a larger woodland trail network.

Crushed stone shoulders and vegetated swales help cleanse the road runoff.
Native meadows along the road require no fertilizing, no irrigation, and only once-a-year mowing.
