"Mawrginalia" is the much-loved, magazine-formatted newsletter for The Bryn Mawr School. One of my main goals after being hired was to give it an update as it lacked discipline and diversity in the design. I created a grid structure to impose order and give the publication consistency from cover to cover. New text styles, an updated color palette, and more formal layout rules result in an overall clean, modern design with plenty of room to be creative with feature spreads. The new design debuted in September 2014.
One of the biggest challenges of the redesign was that "Mawrginalia" is distributed online via a PDF publishing tool called Issuu. This creates a digital "magazine" the reader can flip through on a desktop computer. However, some readers choose to download and read—and even print out—the magazine. Therefore, it had to be readable on screen yet still not contain overly large body copy. The solution, while not perfect, was to use a font designed to be read on screen that is still pleasing to the eye when printed out.
