Located in the heart of Strasbourg, in a dense commercial area, Square is an on-site or take away restaurant, offering a Neapolitan-inspired menu : pizza by the slice and coffee in the original version, prepared by piston !

 

The main idea of the project was to dust off the image of the pizzeria, to infuse to it a new atmosphere and energy, a territory between Naples and the New World.

In the collective unconscious, this operates at the mention of "Little Italy”, New-York’s district of the italian diaspora. This will be the aesthetic and narrative guideline of the project !

From then on, everything is built around this idea, in a clear and pretty, modern and subtly atmosphere, where the shades of the italian flag are spread on the walls, in a more or less obvious way.

 

Composed of 3 small spaces distributed around the entrance hall, the place is completely renovated to revolve around the use of the counter where pizzas are presented.

On one side, high seats are organized around a central element for “fast“ eating. On the other side, a room with more “classics” seats to take time. Between this two pieces, high tables to eat, wait, or just drink a quick coffee.

 

As regards the materials and finishes, the mixture also operates. The counter, playing with the structural constraints, combines the red bricks from New-York buildings, to the purity of the Italian Carrara marble, also present at the wall or tables. Perforated bricks laid as “moucharaby”, sheet and other steel tubes evoke the neo-industrial aspect of Big Apple. The black and white checkerboard floor is a nod to De Niro’s Taxi Driver’s car, and offers a cinematographic echo to the mafioso portraits from which Little Italy was the territory. The wood is also present everywhere, from the renovated floor, to the clever handrails serving of magazine rack, and to the hanging billboards... Square : Little Italy by nature !
