Description
Subtraction is an illustration from Vorontsov’s “Absurdia” series. The illustration depicts forest life being destroyed, in order to bring new suburban communities and residential spaces. A truck easily tows away a large segment of land.

Communication Objective
Subtraction tells the story of how homes were sacrificed, in order to generate new homes for families to move into suburban divisions. This image invites the viewer to realize this sacrifice and appreciate what they have, how much was sacrificed for them, and contemplate what they can potentially do to reduce their collective carbon footprint.

Tools used
Rough drafts were created by using Illustrator and Photoshop, before painting the images. Vorontsov originally painted the work in black and white, and then used Photoshop to edit and manipulate the work. Colour and small details were added, which otherwise, would not have been achieved through a real paintbrush. The digital tools helped to both start and finish the piece.
