The Design of Fame: Featuring George Lois

"The actual inspiration for the award was the Trylon and the Perisphere. You gotta understand how incredibly famous that image is. Back then, that meant everything."

George Lois, on the design of the award

"The first prototype we did with Tiffany's was this A and this D. Just the idea that you have it and you can move it into place. It's so tactile. I've had people who've gotten the award who say the thrill of it beyond the look of it is the fact that it's movable."

"I think the idea of the club really makes sense: people getting to know each other and be inspired by each other."

George Lois, on the creation of the Art Director's Club

"First thing: you have to do great work. And the second thing is: if you have to, you pick up a dictionary and you drop it at the foot of a guy and you make him pay attention to you."

George Lois, on his first day at CBS with Will Golden

"On the backbone [of the first book] we have a photograph of each of the 8 men. When you set up all the books 20, 30, 40, 50 years from now you can have the photographs of everybody in the Art Director's Hall of Fame. I thought that was a thrilling idea."

George Lois, on designing the Hall of Fame books

"If you look at the Art Director's Hall of Fame, it was built not just on talent but it was built on ideas, on thinking. I think our jobs are to try to teach the history of graphic design and advertising to young people."

Filmed on a Friday afternoon in George Lois's Manhattan apartment, we created this video for the 2010 Art Director's Club Hall of Fame Awards Ceremony.

The Art Directors Club Hall of Fame began in 1971-2 under the auspices of then President George Lois. Celebrating the best in design and advertising talent, the Art Director's Club Hall of Fame has recognized the likes of Walt Disney, Andy Warhol, Tibor Kalman, Paul Rand, and Charles and Ray Eames. In this video we learn the story of how the award was designed, it's first inductees, and life lessons in being a successful graphic communicator.
