Sikkim Diary

A series of some of the illustrations and photographs that I created during my stay in
the North Eastern Himalayas of India in the state of Sikkim. I was on a project with WWF to collect data about the state animal, red panda's habitat and local medicinal plants. I spent most of my time in on field in Kanchendzonga Biosphere Reserve in West Sikkim.

~The experiences I had there are very close to my heart and the people very special~

Day 1 in the village. The homestay I was at, overlooked a river. This is the living room/ kitchen of my team member's house.
Day 1 on field in the base camp of Sakem. That is our team member Chiring daju sitting near the fire.
Day 1 at base camp of Chilki where I saw my first red panda. It was resting on a tree across my tent!
On a field break, understanding homestay and income of villagers through tourism.
Stop 2: Village

"I I was afraid to live in the mountains for so long.
I thought the feeling of being lonely would sink in often, more often than I could handle.
But then I found friends in the mountains whose laughter and warmth still ebbs in my heart."

Stop 1: Homestay. The little girl is a fireball called by the name of Tshering Donga.
This is a drawing I made for a little secret friend at a school camp in the village of Yuksam, organized by WWF and KCC (Kanchendzonga Conservation Committe. We had to exchange a recycled, handmade gift with a secret friend we were assigned on day 1 of the camp on the last day. As I am not very good at craft I wrote him this letter with an illustration!
