The Piz Buin ACTIVE line were introduced as new suncreens designed to last through heavy activity like sports or running. The design of the package of course leverages the valuable Piz Buin brand equity, but also utilizes a unique metallic silver wave effect with a blue fade which connotes movement, while also referencing the technology and advanced ingredients that have gone into the formula.
The line currently consists of a lotion and an aerosol spray, each available in three SPF ratings.

The fade/wave presented a particular challenge in production, as it was a very intricate design which needed to be produced almost identically on both an HDPE tube using silkcreen, and an aerosol can using dry offset technology.
To create the aerosol version, the brown flood print was knocked out to the aluminum substrate in the shape of the
design, with an overprint of semitransparent blue filling in the appropriate areas.
On the tube, a metallic silver silkscreen ink was applied on a brown tube to lay down the shape of the design, with a light coating of blue overprinting the silkscreen to create the wave. In the darker areas, two hits of blue were necessary. Ink registration was a challenge, with the tolerances for silkscreen being far greater than those for offset, so quality control and inspection was key. Fortunately, the dark brown tube was able to hide minor registration errors that resulted in the light blue
being applied directly to the substrate.
