Cornucopia.
The cornucopia (from Latin cornu copiae) commonly known as “the horn of plenty” is a symbol of abundance and nourishment. Often depicted as a large horn-shaped container overflowing with fresh produce and other edibles, it comes to symbolize wealth and plenitude.
The Cornucopia aims to provide for the overall nourishment of the community by engaging residents in a local food system that is both sustainable and elegant. Built using mostly re-used and repurposed materials, The Cornucopia will function as an urban food forest where residents of all ages can develop a more intimate understanding of where their food comes from.
The unique structure and layout of the Cornucopia makes it an inviting place where residents can assist with the upkeep of the plants, effectively turning them into active participants in a local and sustainable food system. The ingenious design of The Cornucopia as a functional greenhouse will serve to provide shade for the plants during the hottest of summer days, and protection from the elements during the coldest winter nights.
Residents will be educated on which foods grow best depending on the season, and season extending techniques will be used to grow cold hardy vegetables even through the harshest of winters. Implementing passive solar design, water recollection systems, and on site composting, The Cornucopia is designed in its entirety as a pillar of health an as an allegory for healthy and responsible living in the inner city.
